A STREATwise open innovation partner for people and planet

____

MAKE is proud to be an open innovation partner for the STREATwise program, creating positive impact for people and the planet. Together we’ve worked on a range of open innovation projects and initiatives, and we’re only just getting started!

Circular product design, education and engagement

The ‘Open Sauce’ project is on a mission to create a fair, regenerative and connected food system for Victoria by reducing, tracking and converting food system waste into circular products. Working with a collective of food system social enterprises led by STREAT, MAKE collaborated on a range of design activities, community engagement activities and educational outcomes.

Starting small to have a big impact with bite-sized activism

STREAT has always valued community engagement, volunteering and participation in behaviour change campaigns to start small and have big impact.

In 2019 MAKE supported STREAT to increase the impact of skilled volunteer time into more meaningful outcomes by leveraging corporate volunteer days that often don’t get used. We co-designed a range of experiments and activations including a week-long Design Relay. The relay tested and prototyped STREAT’s Siptember campaign, with the goal of reducing single use coffee cups and waste being sent to landfill.

Key outcomes:

  • 47 Design Relay participants across 15 organisations
  • 6 experiments involving universities, volunteers and employees
  • Integrated design thinking, social enterprise know-how and behaviour change
  • Helped to reach Siptember campaign targets.

Education modules and toolkits for not-for-profits

STREATwise has created a suite of free educational tools and templates to support jobs-focussed social enterprises. MAKE has contributed an e-learn and toolkit to this to help social enterprises get to know their customers using Human-Centred Design. There are a wide variety of social enterprises and they are usually working with limited budgets. When designing this module, we wanted to make sure we provided pragmatic advice, methods and tools that were easy to understand and put into practice. Getting to know customers is important for any organisation to help them thrive.
